About Elizabeth Bailey

Assessing 2014

For the last four years, I've been assessing and critiquing for authors working towards publication. My clients range from complete beginners through experienced novelists. In particular, in these days of author choice, I assess and do developmental editing for writers who are self-publishing their work.

At least four writers I helped take their first steps are now under contract with traditional publishing houses, such as Harlequin Mills & Boon and Choc Lit. I have several clients under mentoring schemes, who are either learning or readying their scripts for submission. My self-publishing clients tend to use me every time they put out a book. One client, for example, is now working on her fourth full-length novel, having used my services on the two previous novels.

These days I am able to advise, assist, guide and offer impartial advice on all aspects of writing and publishing, and most of my business is acquired through word of mouth.

I have had 18 historical romance novels published by Harlequin Mills & Boon, which have sold well over a million copies in more than a dozen countries.  My mainstream modern day dual time mystery Fly the Wild Echoes was published by Unlimited Publishing and was a contender for the Booker prize in 2005.

In the nineties, a modern romance was published by Club 199; I founded and wrote for a short story website; and I have had articles and short stories published in magazines.  One of my short stories appears in the Romantic Novelists’ Association anniversary anthology Loves Me, Loves Me Not.

I am concentrating on historical crime, and having written my first book in a potential series in three months, I landed an enthusiastic agent in six weeks, and signed with Berkley Books (an imprint with Penguin US).  The first book The Gilded Shroud came out in September 2011 to excellent reviews, and The Deathly Portent came out in April 2012.

I already have 14 self-published titles out on Amazon for kindle. Many of them are also available on other platforms via Smashwords. Most are backlist historical romances, although four are new, along with two contemporary women's fiction novels.

In the last few years, I have ghostwritten two autobiographies.

As a theatre practitioner, I have also written and directed plays and taught drama to adults and up to A Level in schools.  I have run innumerable writing workshops at Arts Festivals and adult education institutes and have read for the Romantic Novelists’ Association assessment service for new writers.
